Functional Design

Functional Planning and Design

Functional design expands the planning and operational analysis into a clear design definition. Feasible alternative alignments for new or upgraded roads or intersections should be identified and evaluated. Engineering, operational and environmental impacts, as well as construction and operating costs have to be considered.

The key to a successful design is to identify potential problems at this stage before the Client is locked into an alignment that is later found to have problems that may require costly changes.

We believe that it is important to consider construction staging, and traffic operation during construction, as a part of functional design. This assures the Client that the project can be completed with a minimum of changes, or disruption to the public.
