Traffic Calming

Traffic Calming

This topic is often a hot issue in our Neighbourhoods. While it is true that if streets are appropriately designed for their use, traffic issues will not become so contentious, we are faced with many areas where remedial action is required.

There are many methods that can be used to "traffic calm" an area, including engineering measures, education and enforcement. However, without appropriate design, education and enforcement are not long term solutions. "Calming" devices can include partial closures or speed humps (illustrated), traffic circles, chicanes, or simply narrowing the roadway to more narrowly contain vehicles.

Ideally, we prefer to incorporate "traffic calming' concepts in the design of the development, so that it does not later become an issue requiring retrofitting.
